Oh, Australia

I constantly find myself adding two hours to the time and changing it to either AM or PM in my mind and think about what's going on in Australia. When it's 3 in the afternoon here, and I'm running errands or doing homework or housework, it's 5 in the morning the next day there. Most of the people I love there are still asleep. When it's 9 at night here, and I'm winding down, either doing some more studying or hanging out with friends, it's 11 in the morning there, and I'd probably be having my morning tea. It was always coffee for me though; I couldn't quite wrap my mind around tea being HOT and unsweet. I'm clearly Southern through and through.

There are other times when it seems like I didn't even experience Australia. I know that sounds ridiculous, but not having a single soul in my community here experience what I experienced makes it seem like it was just a dream. Life went on in Augusta, and I'm back in the swing of things here. In some ways it seems like I was never gone.

And then somehow I come across gems like these...

I instagrammed this about a week after I got home, and I put it up on facebook. Many of my Aussie friends "liked" it or commented on it. Comments like "We miss you too!" and "Please come back!" just filled my cup to the brim. My personal favorite was from Michael, the guy in the middle with the hat on with me, who said, "We are HOT...!" Haha. These people are great. Just great. I miss this place so much. (I do have plans to go back for a longer time after I graduate, but I also know that the Lord could call me to something completely different.)

As I sit here and type this, tears come to my eyes. There were certain people that I made a point to see within the first 48 hours of being back home, but others I have gradually seen as time has gone on. Our children's minister was one of those people. I ran into her last night, and she asked me about my trip. I said something along the lines of it being hard to say goodbye and come home. She looked at me and said, "Good. Whenever you go to a place, if it isn't hard to leave, then obviously you didn't do the job you were meant to do. But, it was hard for you, and you did the job you were supposed to do." That struck me as so true--if I had just left without any emotions, then what would I have accomplished? Absolutely nothing. But, by the grace of God, I was able to connect with some fabulous people and make some spectacular relationships and do the job He had for me.

Not only did I make great relationships in Australia, I had quite a few "life experiences" as my old boss Grant calls them. I felt my first earthquake...funny story about that one. I was staying with a sweet widow who lived in Texas back in the 90s when the earthquake happened. The night before, we were talking about earthquakes, and I said I had never been in one before. She looked at me and said, "No worries. We don't get earthquakes in Victoria (the state I was in)." Okay, I thought and went on with my business. And then the next day, we had an earthquake! She looked at me and said, "That was an earthquake!" Why yes it was.

I also ate shark. Seriously. Another funny story. I'd been ordering "flake" whenever we went to fish and chips shops (the picture above). Now, does that LOOK like shark to you? No, not to me either. I never thought that I would be eating shark. One night during our last week there, Maggie and I were eating this with our host, and she looks at me and says, "So, you like our shark, do ya?" I was very confused. I said, "I've never had shark." She kind of smirks, points to the flake, and says, "Well, what're'ya eating?" "Flake," I said. "I'm eating flake." "Flake is shark, Ashton," she says. "Great white shark." "Oh, well, I guess I like it then!" I can almost bet that I wouldn't have eaten that if I had known it was shark; however, I'm looking forward to eating it again!

Oh, to be in Australia again. I'd give a lot, and I wouldn't even complain about the long flight!

fill-in-the-blank-friday!

1.  My favorite thing to do on Friday is     sleep in! I don't have classes on Friday, and I have to say that is the smartest decision I've ever made   .

2.   This Friday I am   meeting with my new small group for dinner and hoping to head to a birthday party for one of my senior girls for a little bit     .

3.  The best thing about a weekend is    that it isn't the week, and you get to do what you want to do  .

4. Now that summer is almost over, I'm feeling     excited. I enjoy fall a lot, and I'm sick of being SO hot. However, summer in Georgia lasts FOREVER so, it may be a while until we really have fall .

5. The best thing I did this summer was   umm, go to Australia? For sure .

6. The thing I'm looking forward to about fall is  the clothes and COLLEGE FOOTBALL...in the South, football is a way of life :) and Caramel Apple Spice from Starbucks .

7.  If I had to be stuck in one season for the rest of my life, I would choose   either spring or fall, not too hot, not too cold .

Also, this Friday, I'm celebrating the engagement of one of my dearest friends, my "brother", Drew. I've been waiting for a while for this to actually happen, and when he told me the other day that it would be soon, I couldn't wait. So, getting this texted to me this afternoon made this day SO much better :)

My 2.5 Weeks of Summer

After I got home from Australia, I had about 2.5 weeks left of summer before I started back to college. I was bound and determined to make the most of those 2.5 weeks, and I think I can say that I did. I spent a lot of time with almost all of the people that I missed over the summer. The only person I haven't seen is my BFF Caroline who I will see in September when I head to Auburn for a weekend! I enjoyed having these past 2.5 weeks to be lazy and hang out, and while I'm not looking forward to the school part of school, I'm looking forward to being back in a normal routine, and I'm looking forward to what God is going to do in our college ministry this semester.

Hung out with these cool kids one night. As you can tell, one half of the table wasn't too thrilled with the idea of taking pictures.
Spent five days looking at this. Ahhh, the life.
We're all still kids at heart.
SO happy he's back in my life :)
Seriously so beyond grateful for these three.
Introducing...my new roommate, Caroline! Love her!
Dessert at one of Augusta's finest, Boll Weevil
Babysat this cutie and her big bro then went to lunch with them and their momma. Also so beyond glad to have them back in my life!
And, back in OZ, sweet Jemima (on the right) turned 5! Is this not the cutest picture in the world? Missing them heaps.

I've also been busy with getting my hair cut (I got four inches off), going back to Augusta Christian for a scrimmage, having sleepovers with some of my favorite SENIORS (I can't believe they are that old), and watching Hatfields and McCoys (so good). It was a great 2.5 weeks of summer. Looking forward to what God has in store for me next summer!

The Land Down Under.

I'm missing that place just a little bit today, but this video makes me smile.

home.

August 1 was by far the longest day in the history of the world. I left Sydney at 1:40 in the afternoon and landed in Los Angeles at 10:30 in the morning. On the same day. Needless to say I was more than ready for bed, and I still had another flight plus 2ish hours in the car before I could get there. I had a tight connection (90 minutes), and I was worried that I would miss my flight. Thankfully, I got through immigration, customs, and security all within 30 minutes and made it to my gate before they started to board. This was such a blessing because a lot of my teammates waited in security and stuff for quite a while. It was hard to say goodbye to them, but I was ready to get back to Augusta.

I was greeted in ATL by my sweet parents, and after getting my heaps of luggage (that's another story for another day), we made our way out of the airport and off to Chickfila. I have to say, I was quite looking forward to their sweet tea, and it was sort of disappointing. We quickly made our way to Augusta, and all the while I was texting my roommate, Caroline, not really knowing what to expect when I got home. If I had to guess, I thought I would be catching up with her and her boyfriend that night. However, I was welcomed home by this...

Why yes, that is a beaver sitting in my living room.
Caroline threw me a surprise welcome home party, and it was so wonderful!
I had absolutely no idea, and it was great to see all of my sweet friends immediately.
My friend Corey is the one in the beaver costume, and it freaked me out at first but has now become a joke for all of us.
Love these ladies!
And this one too!

While it was hard to say goodbye to my sweet family in Pakenham, this welcome home made coming back so much sweeter. I've been enjoying these past few days catching up with friends and family and enjoying a few of my favorite restaurants. I have also managed to drive on the wrong side of the road, and I have referred to Pakenham as "back home". Clearly my heart is in two places.

I have enjoyed watching the Olympics a lot as I tend to stay up late while I'm getting back on Augusta time. That being said, this video makes me laugh a lot.
